- Check your attic for leaks or water damage. Look for damp rafters or water-stained roof decking. Water-stained insulation also indicates a leak and can lead to mold.
- Check your ceiling and walls. Moisture marks, brown, yellow, or grey stains, and peeling paint on your ceiling and/or walls could all indicate a damaged, leaking roof, and it will need inspecting.
- Check your home from the ground. There’s a lot that you can see from just standing outside your home. Check for missing or damaged shingles or missing pieces of metal flashing, especially around vents or chimneys. If the storm produced hail, check for roof damage. Hail damage commonly comes in the form of dimples.
- Large debris on your roof. If a tree, very large limb, or other structure falls on your roof you can suffer structural damage. Stay out of your home until a professional can determine whether any structural damage occurred.
- Hire a Roofer. Stay safe – Call a roofer for a professional inspection. Getting on your roof is not recommended as it can lead to personal injury and also further damage your property. Reputable, local roofers have the tools and safety techniques to get up on your roof and check for damage.
